LEWIS, Wyndam (1884-1957). The Apes of God. London: The Arthur Press, 1930.
Thick 4o. Original tan cloth (lightly spotted); pictorial dust jacket (slightest soiling and edgewear). Provenance: Peter Russell, British poet and bookseller (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION, one of 750 copies, this copy stamped "Press Copy." PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY LEWIS on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Peter Russell from Wyndam Lewis with best wishes for the progress of his Circle. Nov. 1948." Russell was a young British poet and bookseller who at the time of presentation was preparing to launch his literary periodical Nine (originally intended to be called Circles). Russell later edited a festschrift for Ezra Pound's sixty-fifth birthday to which Lewis contributed. Lewis hoped his monumental novel would "revive" English satire, which he felt was showing signs of exhaustion. Morrow and Lafourcade A12a.
