FIRST EDITION, one of 50 copies. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WAUGH TO ONE OF HIS STUDENTS on the front free endpaper: "Edmund from his friend the Author Nov. 1926." "Edmund" was a favorite student of Waugh's at Aston Clinton, where he taught after leaving Oxford. He is mentioned on numerous occasions in his diary in 1926: "Today Charles and Edmund took me to see a pond which they have been making in secret in a corner of the park... On Monday afternoon I found Edmund out of bounds and beat him with mixed feelings and an ash plant. He was very sweet and brave about it all. I have given him a Sulka tie as a recompense" (The Diaries of Evelyn Waugh, ed. Michael Davie, Boston, 1976, pp.246, 254). One entry even mentions a minor role played by the boy in the book's publication: "No one has received P.R.B. because Edmund forgot to post them" (22 November 1926, p.271). A copy with the same exact wording of the inscription to "Charles," presumably that mentioned as Edmund's friend in the diaries, was sold at Sotheby's London, 15 July 1999, lot 376.
P.R.B. was Waugh's first book following his pamphlet, The World to Come, published when he was just 13. Waugh and Alistair Graham, the printer-publisher of P.R.B., met at Oxford, and Waugh's father paid the production costs. Davis et al, II.
