It is most rare at Sèvres to find enameled decoration enriched in gilt such as that found on the present example. Its painter, Philippe Castel, is recorded working at the factory 1771-1797 as a painter specializing in flowers, birds and landscapes. The gilder, Henry-François Vincent père, is recorded at Vincennes and Sèvres as working in this capacity 1753-1800.

Factory payment records for 1774 indicate that Castel was paid overtime (en extraordinaire) for pieces including gobelets 'Litron' decorated with birds (M.N.S Archives, Carton F16). Our thanks to Madame Tamara Préaud for her assistance in this research

A hard paste cup and saucer of the third size, also dated 1773 and similarly painted by Castel, gilt by Nicolas Schrader and from the collection of Charles-Otto Zieseniss was sold Christie's Paris, 6 December 2001, lot 313.
