The cup of inverted pear shape with entwined branch handle, finely painted en grisaille with portraits of Werther (on the cup) and Lotte (on the saucer), each reserved within a gilt ribbon-tied ovolo surround on the faux agate ground, the saucer with a similar gilt ovolo rim

Lot Essay

The decoration on the present cup and saucer portrays the lead characters in Goethe's first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. Published in 1774, it became an overnight bestseller around Europe, elevating its author to cult celebrity status.
