Lot Essay

This is a copy of a painting by Mu'in's master Reza 'Abbasi, now in the Detroit Institute of Arts, inv.no.58.334. The Reza original is of a pale skinned European boy, evidently a favourite of the artist, reclining against two ornate cushions. Although the colours are slightly different and the boy faces to the left rather than to the right, Mu'in has made a faithful copy of the original, without the rather provocative inscription which Reza appended to his drawing. (Canby, S.: The Rebellious Reformer, London, 1996, no. 128, pp. 174-176)
The date on the present painting is very sketchily written in gold but appears to read 1084.
