RARE AUSLESE GOLDKAPSEL FROM WEINGUT ROBERT WEIL
This very highly regarded estate, founded by Dr Robert Weil in 1875, is situated in the picturesque old village of Kiedrich in the Rheingau and faces the extensive slopes of the famous Gräfenberg (Duke's Hill) vineyard. This estate is brilliantly run by Wilhelm Weil, currently president of the V.D.P. Rheingau, the eldest of Germany's regional assocations of leading wine estates
Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel--Vintage 1996
Rheingau. Weingut Robert Weil
An unusually dry summer, September cool but sunny. A late Indian summer enabled some superb late-harvest wines to be made, of which this is a prime example. The gold capsule indicates the top quality Auslese. Prior to 1971 wine laws this would have been a feinste Auslese - but Weils' Auslesen are equal if not finer than many estate's Beerenauslesen. Of the 400 bottles produced, only 21 remain in the Weil cellar. I have been fortunate to have tasted this lovely wine on six occasions, first in 1997 at the German Embassy in London to celebrate the centenary of the V.D.P. Rheingau, at pre-sale tastings and elswehere. In December 1999 I wrote that this wine was the star of the tasting of the "Rheingauer Giganten" dinner ...... a spectacular wine whose inimitable bouquet power-floated effortlessly out of the glass. Very sweet, fleshy, silky, gloriously ripe. Perfection. Last tasted at the Welt-Raritätenprobe at Schloss Johannisberg, Nov 2000. M.B.
