The openwork roundel with a figure of an eagle flanked by a thunderbolt and palm frond, the eagle standing on a pedestal with outspread wings, head turned to its right, an attachment loop behind; and another bronze eagle roundel, the baldric attachment with a central stylized eagle surrounded by an annular openwork inscription reading "OPTIME MAXIME CON[SERVA]", 3rd Century A.D.

Lot Essay

Item two: cf. M. C. Bishop and J. C. N. Coulston, Roman Military Equipment, London, 1993, pp. 130-135, fig. 91/2 for a similar roundel found in Carlisle. Other baldric attachments are known in the same inscribed style, these plates and pendants form a set with the eagle phalera, the whole inscription asks for Jupiter's protection over the wearer's military unit.
