Lot Essay

For a gladiator mounted on a knife handle, cf. J. Petit, Bronzes Antiques de la Collection Dutuit, Paris, 1980, pp. 145-146, no. 77. The helmet of this gladiator with its smooth crest suggests the helmet of a secutor but the perforated visor is like that belonging to the murmillo, for a terracotta gladiator with similar detailed apparel cf. R. Jackson (ed.), Gladiators and Caesars, The British Museum, London, 2000, p. 139, pl. 157.
