The cover is finely and deeply carved through the cinnabar lacquer to depict three pomegranates growing on flowering branches, the branches extending to the vertical sides with further pomegranates, all against a black lacquer leiwen-ground, the interior of the vertical sides rendered in floral form to receive the conforming rim of the box, the base incised with three pomegranates centred on flowering branches, interiors with black lacquer (extremity nicks, restoration)
