The subject-matter and the style of decoration of the present lot compare closely with those on a group of dishes dated from the middle of the 15th century to the end of the 16th century. Although these dishes, as well as the present tray, retain 15th-century characteristics in the floral border, the pictorial designs correspond closely to the woodblock prints of the Wanli era. Compare the present lot to a floral-rim dish included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition East Asian Lacquer: The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, New York, 1991, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 60.
