A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR 'DRAGON' BOX AND COVER
JIAJING GILT AND INCISED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)

The cover is finely carved with a sinuous dragon leaping amidst cloud scrolls, a Shou character in grass script rising out of its open mouth, above waves crashing against rocks, surrounded by a peony scroll on the sloping sides above further floral motifs at the rims of both box and cover, the peony scroll repeated on the tapered sides of the box, above the circular foot ring, fifth claws on the dragon removed, age cracks, repairs

Lot Essay

The style of carving on the present lot and the auspicious subject-matter are all features typical of the Jiajing period. A Jiajing-marked box, very similar in shape, size and design, is illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 5, 1995, no. 113; while no. 114 shows a dish which compares closely with the boxes in its primary design.
