Lot Essay

The name, Zhi Yan, is the designation of the early Qing dynasty carver, Zhou Hao, well-known for carving landscapes in the style of the Song and Yuan masters, cf. Chinese Bamboo Carving, Part II, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1982, pp. 56-58. A comparable brushpot, the exterior rendered with this form of stylised bamboo and rock carving from the Simon Kwan collection, included in the exhibition, Ming and Qing Bamboo, the University of Hong Kong, 2000, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 91. A more naturalistic carving bearing the name of the same carver is offered in the present sale, lot 747.
