The body painted in bright blue tones to depict a dignitary and his wife awaiting the arrival of equestrian visitors, the couple seated in a pavilion surrounded by children and attendants before a hanging backdrop of rocks and breaking waves, the cylindrical neck painted with bands of ruyi lappets, key pattern and circles, the inside of the mouth-rim prick-engraved with a dated dedicatory inscription, the sixth year of Qianlong, corresponding to AD 1742, rim and neck restorations, body cracks

Lot Essay

The inscription reads, Qianlong liunian qiuyue Xue Hua wei ? xian anzhi, which can possibly be translated as:
In the autumn month of the sixth year of the Qianlong reign, set up by Xue Hua for ancestor(?).
