Lot Essay

The mark reads zhi, which can be translated as 'made'. See G. Davison, The Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics, London, 1994, no.1650, pp.149 and 193, where the author indicates that this form of the zhi mark was for Imperial use. Compare the dish of similar size and with radiating panels, from the Salting Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by Gorer and Blacker, Chinese Porcelain and Hardstones, London, 1911, vol.I, plate 133; and another, slightly smaller, which also bore this rather unusual mark, and sold in these Rooms, 13 November 2001, lot 224.
