Signed Kuninobu, Kamakura Period (14th Century)
Sugata [configuration]: shinogi-zukuri [longitudinal ridge], chu-kissaki [medium point], iori-mune [shallow peaked back], strong koshi-zori [curvature near the tang]

Kitae [forging pattern]: a combination of ko-itame [fine wood grain] and mokume [burl wood grain] with some running, shirake-utsuri [whitish reflection], ji-nie [hard metal granules] and chikei [short lines of nie]

Hamon [tempering pattern]: a combination of chu-suguha [straight line of medium width] and gunome [small pointed curves] with ko-nie [small nie] and sunagashi [thick lines of nie]

Boshi [tip]: komaru-sagari [descending small circle]

Nakago [tang]: ubu [unaltered] with katte-sagari [diagonal file marks sloping towards the back of the tang], two mekugi-ana [holes for retaining pegs], kuri-jiri [rounded heel], signed to the left of the ridge just below the upper mekugi-ana (which pierces part of the first character) Kuninobu

Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 29¾in. (75.6cm.)
Sori [curvature]: 7/8in. (2.3cm.)
Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 1 3/16in. (3.0cm.)
Sakihaba [width before tip]: ¾in. (1.9cm.)

Fitted with a two-piece gilt habaki [collar]

In its red lacquered katana koshirae [set of mounts] comprising: red lacquer scabbard with some gold dust; tsuka [hilt] covered in white same [rayskin] and wrapped in blue, black and brown braided silk forming a lozenge pattern; two shakudo menuki [hilt fittings] formed as foliage in gilt; shakudo nanakoji fuchi-kashira [pommel and collar], kurikata and kaerizuno [cord fittings] in Mino style engraved with deer and autumn flowers in gilt; simple black lacquer koikuchi [scabbard mouth] and kojiri [scabbard butt]; circular shakudo tsuba [hand guard] pierced with kiri and details in gilt, 3¼in. (8.3cm.); shakudo nanakoji kogai [skewer] worked in relief as a flower and leaves with dew in gold and silver; 19th century, with shirasaya
