A Bizen school Tachi blade
Traditionally Attributed to Motoshige, Unsigned, Nanbokucho Period (14th century)
Sugata [configuration]: shinogi-zukuri [longitudinal ridge], chu-kissaki [medium point], iori-mune [shallow peaked back]

Kitae [forging pattern]: itame [wood grain] with some slight running patterns and utsuri [reflections of the tempering pattern]
Hamon [tempering pattern]: gunome-midare [small pointed curves with irregularities] and some squared gunome with togari-ba and ko-nie [very small hard metal granules]

Boshi [tip]: ko-maru [gently turned-back temper line]

Nakago [tang]: o-suriage [substantially shortened], kuri-jiri [rounded heel], katte sagari yasurime [diagonal file marks sloping towards the back of the tang], two mekugi-ana [holes for retaining pegs]

Horimono [carvings]: single bohi [groove] on each side continuing down to the heel

In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard]

Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 26 3/16in. (66.5cm.)
Sori [curvature]: 9/16in. (1.36cm.)

Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 1 3/16in. (3.0cm.)

Sakihaba [width before tip]: 15/16in. (2.4cm.)

Accompanied by a late mounting comprising black lacquer scabbard, the hilt covered in white silk, the iron tsuba [hand-guard] decorated with flowers and foliage in gilt, the menuki [hilt-fittings] formed as gilt bars, plain iron fuchi-kashira [hilt-pommel and collar] and kojiri [butt-piece] decorated with aoi mon [hollyhock crests] in gilt
