A Set of Five Pewter Dishes
Chinese, Late Ming Dynasty (Late 16th-Early 17th Century)
Each roughly square with a flat rim and recessed interior, the interiors chiselled with five different scenes taken from illustrated books featuring figures in landscapes and with brief descriptive inscriptions, the rims and sides chiselled with floral designs, in fitted wood box inscribed on the outside Suzu kabon [Tin (or pewter) sweet dish] and on the inside to the effect that the dishes are the work of a late Ming-dynasty artist named Chao Liangbi, the inscription dated to the fourth year of the cycle, probably 1867 and signed Zoroku with two seals
