FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest scientific books printed in the Netherlands, containing the only map printed there in the 15th century. The influence of this edition was profound. Pierre d'Ailly's opinion that the world was round and his calculations about the size of the globe were an important basis on which Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492. Columbus's own copy of this edition of the Imago mundi, with his extensive annotations reflecting close study, is preserved at the Bibliotheca Colombina, Seville.
AN EVIDENTIARY COPY FOR THE ACTIVITY OF THE LOUVAIN PRINTER JOHANNES DE WESTFALIA AS AN EXPORTER OF BOOKS TO ENGLAND. A fragment of a book inventory from 1483 survives, which lists over 100 volumes received by the Oxford bookseller Thomas Hunt from Johannes de Westfalia and Peter Actors. Included in the inventory are two copies of this work, priced at 4 shillings each. The original Oxford binding of the present copy, executed in a shop associated with Hunt and Theodoric Rood, links it directly to those listed in the inventory.
The volume was originally owned by Benedictine monks of Durham Cathedral Library, who studied at Oxford. A number of Durham Priory books, such as the present one, survived in the library of the Tempest family (see lot 106). Christie's is grateful to Professor A.I. Doyle for identifying the hand as Swalwell's.
[Preserved as sewing guards in three quires ee-gg, vellum strips containing lines 1 (very partial), 12-14 and 17-19 from:]
SIXTUS IV (Francesco della Rovere, 1414-1484, Pope from 1471). [Indulgence to benefit the Knights of Rhodes (John Kendale, Commissary; single issue)]. [Westminster: William Caxton, 1480]. Type 4:100B, woodcut initial. STC (addenda: III, 279) 14077c.107C; Needham, Printer & Pardoner, Cx 42.
The present copy also preserves fragments of one of only 3 known printings (Needham Cx 36, 42 and 43) of an Indulgence printed by William Caxton at Westminster in 1480. Issued to raise funds for the defense of Rhodes by the Knights Hospitallers against the Turks, the indulgence was valid from Palm Sunday, 26 March 1480 to Easter, 22 April 1481. John Kendale, the highest ranking English Hospitaller, ordered on at least 3 (and possibly) 4 occasions in 1480 a stock of printed Indulgence forms, with blanks for the grantee's name and the date to be filled in. Once expired, unsold copies were apparently recycled for the vellum on which they were printed and are preserved today only as fragments of bindings. HC 836*=837; BMC IX, 146 (IB. 49230); BSB-Ink. P-321; CIBN A-250; Polain 134; Schäfer/von Arnim 268 Goff A-477.
