ZABARELLIS, Franciscus de (1360-1417). Lectura super Clementinis. Turin: Nicolaus de Benedictis and Jacobinus Suigus, 23 August 1492.
Royal 2° (416 x 291mm). Collation: a-z \\i \\n8 \\g A6 (a1r title, a1v dedication by Suigus to Petrus Cara, a2r text, A6r colophon and resigter with woodcut device, A6v blank). 212 leaves. 66 lines and headline, double column except for the dedication on a1v. Types: 190 G; 120 G., heading on A1v; 91G.. 3- to 13-line initial spaces with guide-letters. (Title with vellum repair along inner margin, a2 a little waterstained, occasional slight soiling of margins.) Contemporary blind-tooled quarter calf over bevelled wood boards, three (of four) metal clasp plates remaining on lower cover which is titled in ink, pastedowns of vellum waste from a manuscript in [?]9th-century Caroline miniscule (rebacked in modern calf). Provenance: some annotations and scoring in an early hand.
Fifth edition. Zabarellis, who was eventually created cardinal by John XXIII, taught canon law at Florence from 1385 to 1390 and at Padua from 1390 to 1410. His Lectura super Clementinis refers to the Decretals, also known as the Liber septimus, issued by Clement V. Although it long remained a standard work on canon law, the eight editions published up to 1500 are all extremely scarce. This edition by Nicolaus de Benedictis and Jacobinus Suigus was reprinted from the edition of De Gregoriis, Venice, 1487, with the addition of the title and dedication, employing law text type and a large bold heading type.
