ANTONINUS FLORENTINUS (1389-1459). Confessionale: Defecerunt scrutantes scrutinio. - JOHANNES CHRYSOSTOMUS (attributed to) . Sermo de poenitentia. [Cologne: Printer of the 'Historia S. Albani' (Johann Guldenschaff), not after 1472).
Chancery half-sheet 4° (212 x 142mm). Collation: [1-188] (1/1r table, 1/4r Confessionale, 18/3v Johannes Chrysostomus, 18/8 blank). 143 (of 144, without final blank) leaves. 27 lines. Type: 1:97G. 2- to 4-line initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red. Printed page-by-page, as shown by the skewed impression of 13/5v. (Small wormholes at beginning and end affecting a few letters, occasional marginal dampstain, a little soiling, minor paper flaw in 6/8.) 18th-century marbled boards (rebacked, rubbed). Provenance: a few marginal annotations, extracts from the Council of Basil (1435) transcribed in a humanist hand on to front flyleaf -- WILIBALD PIRCKHEIMER (1470-1530, woodcut bookplate by Dürer, a few annotations?; inherited by his son-in-law Wilibald Imhoff and sold by the Imhoff family to:) -- Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel (1586-1646, bookplate; presented by his nephew, Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk in 1667 to:) -- London, Royal Society (sale Sotheby's, 4 May 1925, lot 6) -- Victor Klemperer (1876-1942, bookplate, catalogue 1927, no. 62, sale Sotheby's 28 June 1991, lot 578).
Distinguished as the work of an independent press by Bradshaw, books given to the 'Printer of the Historia S. Albani' have been assigned more recently by Geldener to Johann Guldenschaff. This edition is a close reprint of one of three issued by Zel from about 1468 (see previous lot). The present copy was owned by Wilibald Pirckheimer of Nuremberg, a German humanist who counted among his friends Albrecht Dürer (who designed his bookplate), Pico della Mirandola, Martin Luther, and Erasmus.
