TURRECREMATA, Johannes de (1388-1468). Expositio super toto psalterio. Mainz: Peter Schoeffer, 11 September 1474.
Super-chancery 2° and Royal half-sheet 4° [3 sheets in final quire] (311 x 213mm). Collation: [1-810 910(1+1) 10-1610 17..] (1/1r dedication to Pope Pius II, 1/2v blank, 1/3r text, 17/12v colophon and printer's device printed in red). 173 leaves. 35 lines. Type: 1:234G (opening words of each Psalm), 5:118G set with versal letters copied from Hahn's edition. One- to 7-line initials in red, first two major initials in interlocking red and blue with Maiblumen decoration and penwork sprays, versal initials supplied in red in first quire and outer formes only in quire 2, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red. (Some light dampstaining.) Pinhole at centre of fore-edge often preserved. Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards BOUND AT THE MAINZ CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY, sides tooled with unicorn, stork, eagle, fleur-de-lis, rosette, floral spray and Maria stamps (Schwenke-Sammlung Storch 12, Einhorn 36), two fore-edge clasps, vellum quire guards, vellum tabs (rebacked, two corners repaired, front hinge affixed to 2/1). Provenance: Thomas Gerlaq(?), vicar of the Mainz Carthusians (contemporary inscriptions crossed through) -- Mainz, Carthusians (17th-century inscription) -- Mainz, University Library (stamp, duplicate sale note authorised by Fischer) -- Gotha, Ducal Library (stamp) -- 'UP' (bookplate).
Fourth edition. As part of the on-going experimentation in book production in the Schoeffer (and previously Gutenberg-Fust-Schoeffer) shop, the Turrecremata marks a further development in replacing rubrication by hand with a printed equivalent. Here, the use of a black display type replaces rubricated initials; its introduction in quire 2 shows that the edition was printed in 2-page formes. H *15698; BMC I, 31 (IB. 191); CIBN T-376; Polain(B) 3859; Goff T-520.
