Johannes (John) Kip had been attached to the court of William of Orange and came to England after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Settling in Westminster he worked for various London publishers, engraving the works of local artists. This, his largest work, evolved from the Britannia Illustrata published in 1708. The plates produced for this earlier work were engraved from 'bird's-eye' drawings of Leonard Knyff (1650-1722), a fellow Dutchman who had come to London sometime after 1676. As the work expanded plates were added by Kip and other eminent artists, forming a valuable record of the houses of the landed gentry during this flourishing era of expansion. Cf.Berlin Kat 2328; Hollstein Kip 11; Lowndes II,p.1277-1278. (6)
