The serpentine toprail above a pierced athemion vertical splat, the outscrolled arms with eagle-head terminals, above a padded seat covered in green velvet damask, on square channelled chamfered legs joined by stretchers

Lot Essay

A related palm-flowered medallion features in the splat of a chair in the Victorian and Albert Museum, while similar eagle-headed arms feature on a walnut writing-chair presented to the Museum in 1924 (M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, Q/2 and R. Edwards, A History of the English Chair, London, 1951, no. 56).
