Rectangular polished gold box, the cover inset with a rectangular micromosaic depicting a classical mountainous riverside landscape, the raised gold borders dye-stamped with foliage, the slightly raised thumbpiece cast with mirrored foliate scrolls on a matted ground

Lot Essay

The inside of the lid is engraved with the Papal arms and inscription: 'Presented at Rome Dec.r 1: 1816. by Pope Pius the VII.t. TO CAPTAIN THOMAS FORREST Commanding H. M. Frigate Ister, on the occasion of his restoring to their Country, the last of the Christians liberated from SLAVERY at Tunis.'
