A fine 19th-Century Austrian marble-finished brass theodolite,
signed Starke & Kammerer Wien No 7168, the 9-inch long telescope with over-mounted graduated bubble level, objective lens dust-cap and ray shade (replacement) and rack and pinion focusing to the eyepiece, mounted on two curved supports with a graduated silvered-brass quadrant with magnifier, vernier and paper shade and a sprung micrometer screw for fine adjustment, the black-painted and silvered-brass horizontal circle with twin bubble levels, magnifiers, verniers and paper shades, with micrometer fine adjustment and a screw clamp beneath, mounted on a short brass column and tripod base with three adjustable screw feet and threaded for tripod or staff mounting, in the original fitted case with brass plumb bob, two screw drivers and a small brush, the lid with an applied sheet of instructions for Universal-Nivellier-Instrument Nr. 7169 von Starke & Kammererin Wien., with brass carrying handle, large hook and eye, and carrying strap -- 12¾in.
