A ROMAN GOLD AND GARNET DISK
Circa 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
Originally an element in a necklace, formed of stout sheet, with four cabochon garnets in dog-tooth settings around a central collar-set flat oval garnet engraved with an eagle with outstretched wings, clutching a palm branch in its talons and holding a wreath in its beak, the collar fringed above and below by a band of granulation, with filigree palmettes, granulated diamonds and granulation clusters between the cabochons, and a beaded wire at the outer edge, two loops on either side of the reverse
