BIVORT, Alexandre, Lauren Séraph Joseph de BAVAY and others. Annales de pomologie Belge et Étrengère; publiées par la Commission royale de Pomologie. Brussels: F. Parent, 1853-1860.

8 volumes, 4o (345 x 265 mm). Half-titles, index in vol. VIII. 384 lithographic plates, of which 274 are colored by hand, some heightened with gum arabic, some possibly partially printed in color (some occasional very pale offsetting from text, approximately 10 plates in vol. VII a bit creased). Contemporary French quarter red morocco, diced red cloth boards, spines gilt, decorative endpapers, top edges gilt (some light wear to extremities). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1879; stamps).

FIRST EDITION. A FINE SET, RARELY FOUND COMPLETE. The plates are very finely drawn, and are beautifully hand finished. "The descriptions of many of the fruits are taken from an earlier work [Bivort, Album de pomologie], but the greater number are original... This work had a great success and remains the classical work of reference, with Bivort's Album for varieties of Belgian fruit" (Bunyard). The work is unrecorded in most of the major botanical references and despite its success is rarely found complete. Only one other complete copy has appeared at auction in the last 25 years. British Museum (NH) I:128; Bunyard, p.441; cf. Oak Spring Pomona 53.
