Hortus Sanitatis. [Strassburg: Reinhard Beck], 1517.
Median 2o (302 x 205 mm). Title within woodcut border (variously attributed to Urs Graf, Hans Wechtlin or Hans Baldung Grün), printed in red and black, full-page woodcut of skeleton on k1v, 4 small woodcuts on K1r and 1047 woodcut illustrations in text (including repeats), six- and eight-line woodcut initials, three-line type or metalcut Lombard initials. (Some staining to inner margins, mionor worming occasionally catching letters, heaviest at ends, a few marginal tears, S2, y3 torn and repaired, S8 with lower margin renewed.) Contemporary blind tooled pigskin over wooden boards (light worming to covers, lacks metal clasps). Provenance: Vienna, Monestary of Ulrich and Afra (? early ownership inscription on title); ink marginalia (to a few leaves and at end); C.F. Ph. Martii (19th-century bookplate); Massachusetts Horticultural Society (bookplate).
Sixth edition, fourth Strassburg edition, a page for page reprint of the three Prüss editions, Beck having taken over the Prüss printing establishment. A few of the woodcuts are new to this edition, but most are reprints or very exact copies (a few reversed) of the Prüss blocks; the woodcut initials differ however from the Prüss cuts. Adams H-1019; Cleveland Collections 29; Fairfax Murray German 195; Hunt I, 18; Nissen BBI 2366; NLM/Durling 2469.
