The case with floral marquetry to the plinth now resting on later mouldings, oval lenticle to the trunk door with D-ended panels of marquetry, the lower panel inlaid with flower heads above two facing unicorns, the central panel similarly inlaid with flowers and unicorns and with a song bird above, floral marquetry to the convex throat moulding and to the hood now converted to foward sliding, walnut twist columns, the front now cut for a door, later Knibb-style sound fret to the frieze beneath the top moulding, the 10¾in square dial signed John Drew Londini fecit on the silvered chapter ring with later (?) elaborately pierced blued steel hands, the matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring, foliate engraved calendar aperture and ringed winding holes, cherub-and-foliate spandrels interrupting foliate border engraving, the movement with five baluster pillars (two latched, three pinned) anchor escapement and outside countwheel strike on a bell above the plates

Lot Essay

Drew, Edward. Born circa 1663, apprenticed September 1676 to Joseph Knibb until 1684 and made Free in September of that year. From January to July 1713 he received Clockmakers' Company charity and died in August or September that year.
