1775-1780, blue Bindenchield and incised C marks
Probably designed as a toilet box, the exterior painted all over with diagonally trailing foliate vines weaving in and out of parallel bands of gilt-laurel edged green entrelac, the interior painted with three insects and a bird hovering above a still-life of a basket of brightly colored summer flowers on a grey marble table top; the rims with a gilt metal hinged mount, a thumb rest center front of chased swags and ribbons possibly in pink gold, the interior fitted with a gilt-metal footed lid that when removed serves as a pin tray
6in. (15.2cm.) long
Provenance
Property from the Collection of Jack and Belle Linsky, sold Sotheby's New York, 5 May 1985, lot 34.
Special notice
VAT rate of 5% is payable on hammer price plus buyer's premium
Lot Essay
The very feminine decoration on the present box and the fact that the interior cover also serves as a pin tray point towards its having been designed for a lady's dressing table.
