Lot Essay

Sulpice Brizard, c.1735-1798, received maître in 1762.

Brizard established his workshops in the rue de Cl/aery in 1765, and apparently enjoyed the patronage of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne from the beginning of Louiis XVI's reign. Still flourishing in 1799, when he is cited in the Almanach du commerce, Brizard specialised in the production of refined seat-furniture in a advanced Neo-classical taste. Indeed the spirally-fluted tapering pieds en torse of the offered beregere may perhaps reflect the revival of interest in the furniture of Andr/ae-Charles Boulle, as promoted by the marchand Julliot and the /aeb/aenistes Montigny and Levasseur.
