Lot Essay

What is possibly a preliminary sketch for the figure of the portly gentleman representing 'Age', can be found on the reverse of a drawing for the Dr Syntax series that was exhibited by Morton Morris & Co. and Spink in 1978, no. 34. The discovery of the sketch helps date the present drawing to circa 1809-10 when the Syntax series was drawn.
