Lot Essay

Lewis left England for Spain in the summer of 1832, reaching Madrid in late July. In the early autumn he left Madrid for Granada, spending several days in Toledo on the way. The present watercolour, one of only a few views of Toledo, served as the basis for the more elaborate watercolour which was lithographed by C. Hullmandel, op. cit. The lithograph is dated 1836 and one of a series of 24.
There is a watercolour of the Sacristy of Toledo Cathedral in the Art Gallery, Bolton.
