Portrait of the author, plate of the Melbury fossils after Mary Foster, and 23 plates of shells on 12 sheets (portrait and Melbury fossils plate foxed, 3 plates with offsetting onto text, leaf from The Spectator, 30 April 1822, tipped to pg. 19). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (front cover detached, some rubbing to extremities). Provenance: John Henry Gurney (bookplate); Robert and Loring Dennis (inscription dated 1860 on front free endpaper).
Second edition. Pulteney was primarly known as a botanist and one of the foremost English exponents of Linneaus. This work supplemented John Hutchins' The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset, edition of 1796-1815. Nissen ZBI 3250; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8400.
