Details
KENNEDY, John F. Autograph letter signed ("John F. Kennedy") as President, to Judge Curtis Bok, Washington, 28 March 1962. 1 page, 4to (8 7/8 x 6¾ in.), boldly penned in black ink on pale green White House stationery, evidence of mounting, otherwise in fine condition.
A RARE KENNEDY PRESIDENTIAL AUTOGRAPH LETTER
One year after taking office, Kennedy provides Bok, a justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, with a letter for his autograph collection: "I was most interested to hear of your collection which has great historical interest and significance and must be a resource."
According to American Book Prices Current, only this and one other Kennedy presidential autograph letter (the latter with condition problems) have been sold at auction in the last twenty-five years (although several have changed hands privately in that period). In 1989, John Taylor noted that "I cannot recall a Kennedy ALS as president being offered for sale, but a few examples are believed to be in private hands" (pp. 202-203). The present example compares favorably with a one-page letter, dated October 1961, illustrated in Hamilton, American Autographs, p.553.
Provenance: Hamilton Galleries, 24 February 1977, lot 129, $3200.
