PIERCE, Franklin. Autograph letter signed ("Franklin Pierce") as President, to Secretary of the Interior Robert McClellan, Washington, 23 December 1855. 1 page, 4to (9 1/8 x 7 3/8 in.), integral blank with extensive docket.
PIERCE SUSPENDS LAND GRANTS TO THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD
The Illinois Central Railroad, chartered in 1851, was the first company to benefit from the Federal Land Grant Act passed in late 1850, and began construction of a line between Cairo and Galena, Illinois. Here, as work nears completion, Pierce temporarily suspends the track-laying: "I enclose here with a letter from Genl. Jones in relation to 'the Illinois Central R. Road'--If the patents of land for that road have not been issued, I desire action upon the subject to be suspended until I have an opporty to confer with you."
The construction of this key line gave the city of Chicago access to the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans. During the Civil War, the Illinois Central played a key role in the movement of Union troops into the heart of the South. Abraham Lincoln represented the railroad company in ten legal cases including the celebrated Illinois Central Road v. the County of McLean. An attractive Pierce letter, using larger stationery than was his general custom as president.
