Joseph Uphues (German, 1850-1911) Hercules and the Stymphalian Bird bronze, Hercules poised on tiptoe, looking upwards, taking aim with a bow, on an oval base signed to the top 'J.Uphues' and inscribed to the side with the foundry mark 'Akt-Ges-v-Gladenbeck, u Sohn D. 577', on a rectangular marble socle 23¾ in. (60 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Joseph Uphues studied under R. Begas at the Berlin Academy and sculpted many monuments in Berlin and other German cities. He won a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900.
