Two Derby (Duesbury and Keane) plates from a botanical service
Circa 1795, the first with marks in blue and the second with marks in puce, each with crowned crossed batons and D mark, pattern number 115, 8 to footrim and impressed H
Each with moulded lobed rim enriched in two-tone gilding with lily-of-the-valley, the centres painted with a specimen flower, the first with a hyacinth with two blue flowers and fanned-out green leaves with pink and white bases issuing from a rooted bulb named Hyacinthus Racemosus. Starch Hyacinth. in blue to the reverse, the second with a pink flower, perhaps an anenome, with yellow centre, bud, yellow and brown leaves and a brown rooted stem, and another bud (the blue enael on the first retouched, minor scratches and wear)

Lot Essay

The botanical studies on the present lot and the following three lots were probably taken from Curtis' Botanical Magazine, a copy of which arrived at the Derby factory in 1792 (see John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain (London, 1980), p. 193, pl. 233.
