A claw-footed suite of this pattern, comprising two settees and six chairs, was in the possession of William Hesketh Lever, later 1st Viscount Leverhulme (d. 1925), founder in 1913 of the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight (H.Cescinsky, English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, 3 vols, 1911, vol. II, pp. 182-3). The same patterned back also featured on a set of six claw-footed chairs sold from the Holme collection at 'Formalain', by Morrison, McChlery & Co., 17-20 October 1938, lot 60.
