3 works in one volume. 2° (317 x 197mm). Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, covers with panel of wheat bushels enclosed by a double border of saints (minor worming on front cover, a little soiling, spine bands rubbed at corners, ties lacking). Provenance: Johann Fischart (1546-1590, ownership inscription on title to the first work, dated 1566) -- first title on spine; all three titles penned on fore-edge.
A TALL, CLEAN COPY OF RüXNER'S TOURNAMENT BOOK, OWNED BY JOHANN FISCHART. Third edition, with new woodcuts and much additional material contained in two further parts, each with its own title. The second part describes tournaments and games held at Vienna from 2 May to 24 June in an unspecified year in the 1560s, and part three describes the ceremonial entrance into Bintz of Charles V and his sons on 22 August 1549. A number of the woodcuts are signed 'I.A.' and attributed to Jost Amman; although other cuts are signed 'H.B.', the attribution to Hans Bocksperger is doubtful. The two shorter works deal with the origin of the German nobility, and the defence and provision of a town under siege. Johann Fischart, the first owner of this Sammelband, was a satirical poet and polemicist who obtained his doctorate at Basel and published a total of forty works. He put the legend of 'Till Eulenspiegel' into verse, and published a free translation of the first book of Rabelais' Gargantua (Geschichtsklitterung, 1575). First a Lutheran, and then a Calvinist, he attacked the Jesuits (Jesuitenhültein, 1580), and was always uncompromisingly republican in spirit. Yet, he owned these very aristocratic texts.
