Lot Essay

Held by its sides as he dipped the bottle in white slip, Sugimoto left his finger marks as a decorative element. In 1969 he built his kiln, Teragaito, in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture. In 1974 he became a disciple of the Zen monk Tachibana Taiki at Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto where he studied tea ceramics. Recent exhibitions in 1996 and 2002 were held at the Matsuzakaya Department Store Gallery, Tokyo and at Munich Gallery, Munich, Germany in 1993. His work is in the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut and the Yangjae Museum, Seoul, Korea.
