A Longquan Celadon Twin-Fish Dish
Late Southern Song/Yuan dynasty, 12th-14th century
The interior applied with two scaly fish below freely carved foliate scroll in the well, with a band of narrow petals carved on the exterior below the everted rim, covered overall with a glaze of sea-green tone thinning to a paler tone on the raised areas, the recessed base similarly glazed
13¾in. (35cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Compare the large dish of this type with similar foliate scroll, but with four fish circling the interior, in the Ashmolean Museum, illustrated by M. Tregear, Song Ceramics, New York, 1982, p. 176, pl. 237, where the author notes that "the technique for using underglaze appliqué had been developed earlier and resulted in a freer style".
