Lot Essay

The dark ground and comparatively sparing floral and fruit decoration are characteristic of the Pontypool and Usk factories in the late 18th and early 19th century. It seems likely that the tops of these tables were made using the same technique as if they were to be made into trays but the edges were never angled over (W.D. John and Anne Simcox, Pontypool and Usk Japanned Wares, rev. ed., 1966, pp. 60-61 and pl. 18).
