Lot Essay

The bookcase has lozenge-trellised doors corresponding to a pattern in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788 (pl. 48), while its lacquer-inspired japanning relates to the early 19th Century Chinese fashion such as Frederick Crace (d. 1859) introduced to George, Prince Regent's Marine Pavilion at Brighton.
Related decoration features on a cabinet attributed to Frederick Crace and illustrated in M. Aldrich, The Craces: Royal Decorators, Brighton, 1990, p. 23, no. 1:12.
