AN AUSTRIAN OFFICER'S PRESENTATION SABRE
Anton Stribern, Wien, Graben, third quarter 19th Century
A Viennese silver-mounted sword with etched counterfeit damascus blade of kilij form, bearing a panel of Arabic calligraphy on each side of the forte, gilt metal guard (slightly damaged, the edge sheared either side of quillon), cast and pierced with scrolls, strapwork, the figures of Mars and Minerva, and cartouches with a ribbon inscribed 'Das Offiziers Corps des k.k. 9 Infant Rgmts: /seinem hochverehrten Obersten/Franz Gf.: Thun: Hohenstein', the backstrap bearing the crowned double-headed eagle, and wire-bound shagreen-covered grip; in wooden scabbard covered with cream-coloured shagreen, gilt mounts decorated with strapwork and tropies of arms in relief, two suspension-rings, and the locket inscribed with the maker's name and address
