A PAIR OF MEISSEN FLOWER-ENCRUSTED POT-POURRI VASES AND COVERS
Circa 1900, blue crossed swords marks, one with incision below, after a model by J.J. Kändler
Each finial formed as a bouquet of flowers above a pierced turquoise and gilt-enriched domed cover, the vase finely painted front and back with a rich bouquet within an applied flower and fruit surround scrolling to form the vine handles, a putto to one side, the flower and insect encrusted bases with a nymph and a putto, respectively

Lot Essay

See Dr. K. Berling, ed., Meissen China: An Illustrated History, New York, 1972, p. 52 and 56, fig. 114 for an example of this model circa 1910. Kändler originally designed this model in the 18th century for Frederick the Great in various sizes and with alternate side-figures.
