The moulded breakfront brèche violette marble top above a conforming facade with lappeted band and three frieze-drawers with scrolling foliage, above two cupboard doors opening to reveal a single shelf, decorated with a vase, fruits and flowers, to each side with flowerhead-filled trellis panels and laurel-trails, above the shaped floral apron, the angles headed by a patera above a volute, the conforming convex flowerhead-filled trellis sides above foliate scrolling feet, one drawer with a plaquette engraved CASA SENG/CAO. ERICH & CIA./1731 BMé, MITRE 1751 and the reverse with an old retailers label inscribed GUARDA MEUBLES/THOMPSON/[..]108043

Lot Essay

This commode closely follows the design of an original model executed in 1778 by Riesener (maître 1768; d. 1806) for the cabinet de retraite of Louis XVI at the château de Fontainebleau and later moved to the king's bibliothéque at the château de Versailles.
