There is little firm knowledge on the use of this type of script in Qur'ans from West Africa. It resembles the early form of kufic and suggests that it developed from the Maghribi tradition. Few dated Qur'ans from this region are extant. A very similar Qur'an both in terms of the script and the illumination is to be found in the Bodleian Library (ms.Arab.d.141), dated to the 19th century.
