AN EXTREMELY RARE QINGBAI ARCHAISTIC VASE
SONG DYNASTY (960-1279)

Modelled after the archaic bronze form, the hu is carved to each side with four sets of stylised dragon and phoenix framed within their linear bodies, the shoulder with a band suggesting a taotie mask flanked by a pair of phoenix head handles, the neck incised with a triangular border, the foot encircled by a zoomorphic scroll, all covered in a translucent pale blue glaze pooling within the recesses (rim chip restored, handle restuck)
10 3/4 in. (17.5 cm.) high

Lot Essay

It is quite rare to find qingbai wares copying archaic forms so faithfully, although several examples modelled as cong are known.

The present hu has been modelled after an Eastern Zhou bronze, such as the one in the British Museum, illustrated by W. Watson, Ancient Chinese Bronzes, London, 1977, fig. 50b.
