A RARE PAIR OF CINNABAR LACQUER SQUARE BOXES AND COVERS
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
Finely carved with figures in landscapes framed within rectangular panels along the unusually tall sides of both boxes and covers, the top of the covers with square panels with canted corners, one carved with a scholar and his attendant on a bridge approaching a pavilion beside a winding stream, and the other with a similar scene with the addition of a boatman in the background playing on a flute, encircled by key-fret and a band enclosing bats and peach sprays, with further key-fret bands around the rims and foot rings, all against a floral cell-pattern diaper ground, the bases and interiors lacquered black
